Child Seat Law not strongly enforced in UK?


Last Monday was the first year anniversary of the changes to child restraint law that promotes safety to children passengers. However, the lives of children are still endangered due to non-compliance and inconsistent reinforcement on the side of the motorists and proper authorities.

In 2005, 326 children aged 0-11 died and some are severely injured due to vehicular accidents like car crash. For example, in a 30mph crash, an unrestrained or falsely retrained child can be thrown with a force of 30 to 60 times more than their body weight. These facts show how important child restraints are in vehicles especially in cases of accidents.

The positive impact of the law, child safety is being undermined said Brake, the national road safety charity. Strong police action is required for proper enforcement of the legislation, but sadly, police actions and campaigns greatly vary. A penalty of Ł30 is supposed to be fined to any driver caught with children not properly restrained.

According to the police, they lack the resources to strongly enforce the law. The number of Police officers had been declining and resulting to increased traffic volume.

Brake is concerned that if the law is not properly enforced, risk for children to injuries and deaths related to vehicular accidents will increase.

However, there are also some circumstances that children can legally travel without the car restraints. For children below three years old, can ride a vehicle without appropriate child restraint if none is available. For children between three and eleven years old, they can travel if a child seat isn't available in a taxi, a journey is short and in unexpected circumstances, two occupied child restraints prevent fitment of a third. 

Brake is also calling the attention of parents to do something about this matter for the protection of their children.

 "Most parents want to do the right thing, but some are clearly in need of advice on the right way to fit their child's restraint. The Government needs to close the loopholes which still allow children to travel without a restraint and make sure that the law is enforced. It must be made crystal clear to parents that children traveling unrestrained are at huge risk of being killed or injured in a crash. They deserve to be protected." said Cathy Keeler, head of communications at Brake.

Top Ten Ways to Steal A Car and How to Defend Against them



Car theft is always a part of the local news. Maybe its about time that we look inside the mind of the burglars so we can protect our vehicles from going into their hands.

Here's a list I got from edmunds.com where car stealing tactics are listed, plus, the ways on how to defend against them.


1. Bump against the car to check for a car alarm. Since it seems like everything from a loud Harley to a rumbling garbage truck can set off a car alarm, people have been conditioned to tune them out. Instead of a motion-sensitive car alarm, use one that has a pager that will notify you as soon as your alarm is activated.


2. Break the window or jimmy the lock to gain entry into a locked car. Don't tempt car thieves. Keep valuables out of plain sight. Take them with you or store them in the trunk. Also, if you have a stereo with a removable face plate, take it with you instead of tucking it away in the glovebox.


3. Cut the steering wheel itself if there's a steering wheel lock. Instead of locking just your steering wheel, "lock" your car's ability to go by using a starter disable switch and putting it in a place where only you can get to it.


4. Look for exposed wiring that can be cut or for the central unit of the car alarm to deactivate it. Instead of going to a big retail chain store, have your car alarm installed by a professional car alarm installer, preferably a reasonably shady one. Unlike retail chain employees, these experts know what it takes to make your car elusive to crooks.


5. Look for car alarm decals to figure out which method to use to eliminate the alarm. Never display stickers that advertise what sort of car alarm you have, or audio system for that matter. Consider using a hood lock cable so the thief can't get to your battery or car alarm mechanism.


6. Jump into an unattended running car while the owner is at the ATM, dropping off videos, etc. Never leave your keys in the ignition even for a quick errand. Car theft is a crime of opportunity, so don't make it easy for them to grab yours.


7. Look for the car's title, registration or anything with a home address on it. Keep your registration and insurance information with you and never leave personal information in your car.


8. Stake out sporting events, movie theaters and shopping center parking lots for the car of your choice since they offer the largest variety of cars in one area. Whenever possible, park in lots and garages that have security and/or parking lot attendants. If not, don't park in the farthest corner of the lot but rather near the entrance of these facilities to insure the most foot traffic (and the most potential witnesses). Also, opt for paying the extra couple of dollars for the monitored parking lot instead of using the free parking on the less-trafficked side streets.


9. Find the second set of keys the owner "hid" in the car. Don't leave spare keys in your car or in a magnetic box attached to the underside of your car. Thieves know where all the "hiding places" are.


10. Copy specific vehicle information and take it to the manufacturer to get a replacement key made. Instead of VIN etching the major parts of your vehicle, which doesn't turn most thieves off, drop your business card into the doors through the window slots to identify your car as yours.

The BMW X6 concept had its debut in the Frankfurt on September 11. Those who had the chance to see the BMW's new Sports Activity Coupe were should have been impressed with its great looks.

10 New Renault Models Unveiled


Yesterday, French automaker, Renault unveiled 10 new car models and their financial targets. Aside from the expected sale boosters, the Clio and the Laguna, Renault also launched several models in the opening of the Frankfurt Auto Show.

"The product offensive we promised is now well underway," said Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn in a press conference at the Frankfurt International Auto Show.

"This is the first wave of product launches that will allow us to get back growth in Europe, boost expansion outside Europe and sell 800,000 more cars in 2009 than in 2005," added Ghosn.

Ghosn also revealed Renault's target operating profit margin of 3 percent for this year, 4.5 percent for 2008, and 6 percent in 2009.

Other Renault vehicles that had their debut in the Frankfurt Auto Show includes the Sandero, a vehicle based on the platform for the Logan no-frills car for the Latin American market from November.

The Clio Tourer, a Laguna coupe concept that features a V6 engine and the new Kangoo leisure vehicle and also the Koleos SUV.

"We have been on the defensive, now it is time to go on the offensive," Ghosn said.
With the Green technology focus of the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, Renault is also generating cars that has low CO2 emissions and wants to keep their record of producing these environment-friendly vehicles.

"Never before has Renault developed so many models in such a short time to such exacting standards. Despite strong headwinds the entire team rallied around and so far we are definitely on the right track," Ghosn said.

Because Renault recently added production capacity to their low-cost Logan car, it does not mean that the company has the intention to become a low-cost company.

"There will be more high-end cars -- three Lagunas and more high-end four-by-fours. But if you are not present in the low cost segment you are going to lose your competitive edge," he said.

Kurt Busch wins the Nextel Cup after 2 days delay



After being postponed for 2 days due to heavy rains, Kurt Busch grabbed the Nextel Cup in the Michigan International Speedway. They had an overtime Tuesday to finish the 3M Performance 400.

Following his win last August 5 in the Pocono Raceway, Kurt Busch in his Dodge held off Martin Tuarex Jr. in his Chevrolet. He won over Tuarex in a two-lap final shootout. He’s got two wins in a series of three events and a second championship in the Nextel Cup since 2004.

Temperature: simple trick of Oil companies to pocket Billions from Oil Consumers



Gasoline expands when temperature is high and is of less volume when temperature is low. There is a monetary effect of this scientific phenomenon to all car owners, when the fuel is warmer, it should become cheaper and when it is cooled, it will become more expensive. Unlike Canada, the United States do not have the technology of metering system in our pumps that determines how much the fuel was heated or cooled that adjusts the price accordingly. The upshot? An annual $2 billion hand-out of our consumers’ pockets and into the cash vaults of the oil companies.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root, a North Carolina based company recently manufactured a device—a temperature-sensitive chamber for fuel. The device will be attached to the gasoline pumps and will aid us to regain some of our gas-price pressures. The device is said to be simple and functional and currently widely used in Canada.

Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich, chair of the Domestic Policy Subcommittee headed the second investigation why such technology failed to reach the US oil market.

Warmer fuels delivers less energy to cars and colder fuels delivers more energy, making it advisable not to buy gasoline when it is hot outside. With the temperature-sensitive metering device, we are supposed to pay cheaper for our fuels during the summer because it delivers less energy to our cars.

In Canada, they pay for the energy that they get out of the purchased gasoline. While in the United States, consumers pay for the volume of the gasoline and not the energy it generates.

In the investigation of Kucinich, gas retailers explained that they do not use the heat meters—or the “automatic temperature compensation” because state regulations won’t let them.

"State weights and measures regulations have not adopted temperature correction," said Hugh Cooley, Shell Oil Company Vice President.

“Across the U.S. a gallon is still defined as 231 cubic inches by law.” echoed Ben Soraci, Director of General Sales for ExxonMobil.

Eight Hot Convertibles for this Summer



The summer season is also the convertibles’ season to hit the roads. To add excitement to the heat of the season, the Volkswagen Corporation offered a lineup that consists of models from the newly launched Beetle Cabriolet to the Bentley high-end cruiser. The line up features Volkswagen’s eight open-open air models of Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Volkswagen.

The eight hot convertibles include the New Beetle Cabriolet of Volkswagen, TT Roadster of Audi, Gallardo Spyder of Lamborghini, Continental GTC of Bentley, Eos of Volkswagen, A4 Cabriolet of Audi, Murcielago LP 640 Roadster of Lamborghini, and Azure of Bentley.

The new entrant, Volkswagen Cabriolet is engineered with four gasoline engines that can deliver power ranging from 55KW/ 75 PS to 110kW / 150 PS and a TDI (77 kW / 105 PS). Its image is but a memory of the old Beetle convertible, but new and improved that its cult design greatly attracts glances.

Volkswagen Eos’ power output between 102 kW / 140 PS and 184 kW / 250 PS under the hood of this brilliantly constructed German vehicle. With a five section CSC roof (coupe, sun and convertible roof) consisting of 480 parts that converts the car from a coupe to a convertible as shortly as 25 seconds makes this car one of the most winning German convertibles.

Audi’s TT Roadster has a soft top following Audi’s Philosophy of the Roadster. Housed in its hood is an engine of architecture that powers the vehicle with 184 kW (250 PS) TT Roadster 3.2 Quattro and an option on the 2.0 TFSI with 147 kW (200 PS).
