Chrysler deal approved by four UAW key Locals
According to president of United Auto Workers locals, three out of four major locals have already approved the tentative agreement between the union and Chrysler LLC.
Out of the 1,500 Chrysler workers at Local 869 in Chrysler's Warren Plant, 75 percent voted for the contract approval an the remaining 25 percent are dissidents according to Da Juan Tolbert, the local's recording secretary. The exact figures recorded are a total of 930 employees voted for the contract and 312 are against. The remaining 200 did not cast their votes. In Chrysler's Truck Assembly plant, which is also in Warren, representing 2,600 Chrysler workers, the contract garnered 78 percent approval and 22 percent opposed. According to local president Melvin Thompson, a total of 1,961 of his workers felt good about the pact.
At local 1264 in Sterling Heights, 82 percent out of the 2,000 workers gave the contract their approval said local president Bob Stuglin. The local leader did not give the exact figure to how many voted for the contract but he said that it was the biggest approval votes his local ever given to a deal.
In local 1700, also in Sterling Heights, the votes are still being tallied on Wednesday night. This local makes Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger midsize cars representing 2,500 Chrysler workers.
Approvals of these locals will cause relief to UAW chief Ron Gettelfinger who had faced a lot of oppositions from his members regarding the new deal. Like any other contract to be implemented, the deal must gain majority of the votes.
The four union locals voting Wednesday represent more than 8,600 workers — or roughly 19 percent of the 45,000 workers who would be covered by the historic four-year agreement.
Angela Parker, a Chrysler employee who had worked for the automaker for 10 years initially rejected the contract but eventually gave her approval because she was persuaded by his local president and that the contract entails higher wages for those earning less. "That was my main concern, that they weren't going to be stuck making $16 an hour on the line doing the same jobs that we are doing," said Parker, 40.

The Hottest Technologies for 2008
As the automotive industry attempts to give its consumers the best things possible, they combine the best cars and the best technologies. New car technologies are not just for aesthetic purposes, most of the time, the added cash on the price tags of new vehicles spells additional comfort, and especially, safety. Askmen.com ranked 10 of technologies that combine innovation and practicality, some are already available and some are coming soon. Here they are with their tag prices and cars to which you have to look for them: Navigation With Live Traffic Information Car: BMW 3-Series ($2,100) Coolness rating: 10 Practicality rating: 8 GPS technology has improved commendably during its short time on Earth. No longer do systems advise drivers to cross lakes or drive five miles past the destination, make a U-turn, then come back. Having reliable directions is one thing, but having live traffic alerts beamed onto their cars' nav screens is the real icing on the cake. The best systems can route users around the mess and recalculate the trip without missing a beat or spoiling your plans. Keyless Ignition with Memory Settings Car: Cadillac STS (standard); Jaguar XKR (standard) Coolness rating: 9 Practicality rating: 8 We're talking about multifunction systems that automatically unlock your car when you're within range and allow you to hop in, push the brake and a "start" button, and the car awakes. What's more, the car automatically remembers each driver's favorite settings for seat, steering wheel, mirrors, HVAC, stereo, and more. Best of all, no pointing is necessary. Wi-Fi Car: Aftermarket only (prices vary) Coolness rating: 9 Practicality rating: 8 Passengers or stationary drivers can stay connected with their notebooks through portable, in-car routers for Wi-Fi that have all but eliminated dead spots. Generally speaking, the coverage and quality is similar to that provided to cell phones. Reclining Rear Seats With Massage Car: Lexus LS long-wheelbase models ($12,570) Coolness rating: 10 Practicality rating: 6 Japanese luxury sedans may lack a little prestige and boldness compared to their European counterparts, but their gadgetry is amazing. Take the extended wheelbase Lexus LS models, for example. For the price of a used ES 300, buyers can choose the $12,570 Executive Class Seating option. In exchange, they'll get a right rear seat that reclines, pops up a footrest and indulges the lucky owner with a shiatsu. The coolness and brag factor of having this is understandably high, but the novelty wears a little. Safety Warning Systems Car: Various cars (prices vary) Coolness rating: 7 Practicality rating: 9 Today's safety warning systems can sense lane departure, maintain an adequate space cushion in cruise control mode, recognize imminent crashes and prepare seat belts and airbags for impact, minimize wheel spin, and maximize traction -- without you having to lift a finger. Some say cars have become smarter than drivers, and in some instances, that's true and possibly the only way to keep them -- and us --reasonably safe when they're on the road. Premium Audio Systems Car: Audi A8 (B&O - $6,300); Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano (Bose -- standard); Lexus LS 460 (Mark Levinson - $5,645 to $6,345) Coolness rating: 10 Practicality rating: 7 They are fine-tuned through the collaboration of experts from the audio and auto firms for listening experiences that redefine aural pleasure behind the wheel. Search & Send Car: Mercedes-Benz C-, CL- and S-Class (part of option packages, prices vary) Coolness rating: 7 Practicality rating: 7 We can't help but wonder how many GPS users are defeating the purpose by taking many precious minutes to program detailed directions when they could just be driving. In what will be an undoubted time saver, Mercedes is offering its Search & Send on selected 2008 models. Quickly find your desired spot with Google or Yahoo! Map pages, and then send that info to your car. This should also enable custom routes too, not just what the GPS thinks you should do. Parrot Rhythm N' Blue Car: Aftermarket only ($369 suggested retail) Coolness rating: 8 Practicality rating:: 7 Your mind may not immediately jump to "Parrot" when you're pressed to name well-known car stereo manufacturers. But if you're a techie and was asked to name a firm that was an early player in voice-recognition, Parrot would be one of the first you'd recall. In an effort to bridge that gap and make your life easier, Parrots Rhythm N' Blue combines a decent car stereo with CD, radio, MP3, and Bluetooth capability plus voice recognition for dialing your contacts. Night Vision Car, price: BMW 7-Series ($2,200); Mercedes-Benz CL600 (standard) Coolness rating:: 9 Practicality rating:: 4 2008's night vision technology is the sort of thing The Rockford Files' Jim Rockford would have appreciated while on a stakeout, had it existed over 30 years ago for the Firebird. The technology is handy and the thermal imaging is ingenious, but the night vision available to motorists is positioned best for occasional reference rather than a primary means of nocturnal navigation. Broadcast TV Car: Rolls-Royce Phantom (standard feature) Coolness rating: 6 Practicality rating: 6 On the upside, the Rolls-Royce Phantom complements its DVD entertainment system with live television through its two generous 12-inch screens for rear passengers. On the downside (and what tempered our ratings) was the limitation to free TV, not cable networks via satellite.

How to Drive the Green way
A green vehicle is actually the first step on how to drive green, aside from choosing a green vehicle, the more important thing is how you make the green vehicle even greener. Greencars.org listed several tips on how to drive your car van or light truck the green way: - Avoid "jack rabbit" starts and aggressive driving. Flooring the gas pedal not only wastes gas, it leads to drastically higher pollution rates. One second of high-powered driving can produce nearly the same volume of carbon monoxide emissions as a half hour of normal driving.
- Think ahead. Try to anticipate stops and let your vehicle coast down as much as possible. Avoid the increased pollution, wasted gas, and wear on your brakes created by accelerating hard and braking hard.
- Follow the speed limit! Driving 75 mph instead of 65 mph will lower your fuel economy by about 10 percent, and can dramatically increase tailpipe pollution in many vehicles.
- When possible, plan your trips to avoid rush hour. Stop-and-go driving burns gas and increases emissions of smog-forming pollutants.
- Combine trips. Warmed-up engines and catalysts generate much less air pollution, so combining several short trips into one can make a big difference.
- Take a load off. Carrying around an extra 100 pounds reduces fuel economy by about 1 percent. Take a few moments to unload your cargo area.
- If your vehicle has it, use overdrive gear at cruising speeds. When driving a manual transmission, shift up as soon as possible. Running in a higher gear decreases the rpm and will decrease fuel use and engine wear.
- Try using the vents and opening windows to cool off before you turn on the air conditioner. Air conditioner use increases fuel consumption, increases NOx emissions in some vehicles, and involves environmentally damaging fluids.
- Unlike many older cars and trucks, modern vehicles don't need to warm up and they have automatic chokes, so you don't need to step on the gas pedal before starting the engine.

UAW Chrysler Council Approves New Pact
The United Auto Workers union Chrysler council is made up of local union leader from all over the nation. Yesterday, in a meeting in Detroit, the council expressed their approval of the new tentative agreement with Chrysler LLC. Prior to settling in to the new contract, the union already launched a strike which ended the moment the UAW negotiators announced about the pact on October 10. "The UAW negotiating committees at Chrysler, both hourly and salaried, did an excellent job bargaining this agreement and we look forward to discussing it with our members in explanation and ratification meetings which will begin this week", said UAW President Ron Gettelfinger. "Thanks to the determination of Chrysler workers, we have moved forward on our agenda to protect manufacturing jobs in our communities -- and we have also protected wages, health care and pensions for active and retired workers." "This proposed agreement meets the challenges of our industry head-on," said UAW Vice President General Holiefield, who heads the UAW Chrysler dept. " It sets the stage for future success at Chrysler, and for our members to share in that success." From automotive news.com, here are the highlights of the new four-year Chrysler LLC-UAW deal: - Chrysler to pay $10.3 billion to secure retiree health care: $8.8 billion to fund a Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA). The company also contributes $1.5 billion in pre-VEBA costs.
- Moratorium on plant closings and outsourcing, commitment to in-source jobs to UAW Chrysler facilities.
- Reversal of restructuring plan: MOPAR and Chrysler Transportation retained, reversing company plan to close or sell these units. Cleveland PDC, scheduled to close, will remain open.
- Economic gains total $10,235 for a typical UAW Chrysler worker during the four-year agreement. Gains include a $3,000 signing bonus, two 3 percent lump sums and one 4 percent lump sum.
- Product guarantees at some, but not all, operations. The UAW "will continue to advocate for new product" at assembly plants in Detroit (Conner Avenue), Newark, Del., and St. Louis (South), Mo.
- Wage rollback defeated: Company demanded $1.01 in immediate wage cuts and COLA deferrals. Instead, future COLA diversions will secure long-term health care for current and future UAW Chrysler retirees.
- UAW says that based on projected rates on inflation, earnings for a typical UAW Chrysler member working 10 percent overtime will be an estimated $6,700 higher than his/her counterpart at GM over the four years of the proposed agreement.
- Comprehensive health care maintained for active workers, UAW says.
- Future pension benefits boosted, plus lump sums for current retirees, UAW says.
- Health and safety protection improved, including noise abatement, reduced exposure to hazardous substances and an improved ergonomics design process, UAW says.
- Skilled Trades win 20 cents an hour tool allowance and enhanced training bonus on new technology, UAW says.

A name spells future for Daimler AG
The Daimler-Benz and Chrysler merging forming the DaimlerChrysler AG had been a failure resulting to the selling of the Chrysler LLC group to the private equity, Cerberus Capital Management LP. However, even after losing its 80.1% stake at Chrysler, the German automaker retained the Chrysler name until yesterday as DaimlerChrysler AG becomes Daimler fading the merge in history. The company's attempt to regain the Daimler name has aroused intense sentiments among the Germans who on the first place weren't pleased by the DaimlerChrysler name. The executives and the members of the board want a one-line change in the order that reads: "The name of the corporation is Daimler AG. The registered office of the corporation is in Stuttgart." In 1926, the Daimler group merged with Carl Friedrich Benz's company, and the straightforward renaming of the group surely caused outrage in the adherents from the automotive pioneer's company because their man's name had been slashed from the corporate name for the second time. "A return to including the name of one of the founders, Benz, would ... constitute a certain degree of compensation for the many years of frustration for the employees, particularly in the traditional Benz plants, who deserve to find equal recognition...as the employees of the Daimler plants," shareholder Bernd Gans has submitted as a counterproposal. Name suggestions had been made by shareholder Hans Diem during the Shareholders Extraordinary Meeting held in Berlin. He wanted to name the group Daimler-Benz AG, Benz-Daimler AG or even simply Benz AG. "Problems might arise in connection with a change of name to Daimler AG because there is a vehicle manufacturer in England that has a license to use Daimler as the name of its vehicles," he added, referring to the nameplate on high-end Jaguar cars. Diem had gained the sympathy of shareholder Wilm Diedrich Mueller. "The word Benz should be just as clearly connected with the present corporation...as the word Daimler, but the word Benz has the unbeatable advantage compared with the word Daimler that it is shorter and consists of half as many syllables," he noted. According to the company, legal aspects and strategic factors had been the basis of the Daimler name adoption plus the deal with Jaguar owned by Ford Motor Co., to use the Daimler name. "The name Daimler has a high profile and evokes a high degree of confidence in the expertise of the corporation as a globally respected manufacturer of automobiles and commercial vehicles," it said in response to the counterproposals. "With Daimler, we will also avoid overlaps between the name of the corporation and the most valuable automobile brand name in the world, Mercedes-Benz," it said, pointing out that all plants that make Mercedes-Benz cars will carry that name, too.

New Mercedes Advertising launch, asks WHY?
Mercedes Benz uses new advertising scheme for their new Mercedes Benz C-class. On September 10, airing of the broadcast advertising components of Mercedes' most important marketing campaign for the past few years. The new commercial asks "Why did we devote seven years to creating the new C-class? "Because we promised you a Mercedes-Benz" is the answer. The theme of the advertising campaign is to inform the consumers that every single speck of the C-Class is rightfully Mercedes-Benz. "This is one of our most critical launch campaigns in recent years," says Steve Cannon, the Vice-President for Marketing for Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA). "The 2008 C-Class raises the bar in the entry-luxury segment and is the gateway to the Mercedes-Benz brand for many of our customers -- a good number of whom will move up through the brand over the next decade and beyond. When you combine that with the fact that once our customers join the brand, they tend to stay, then you understand why the C-Class is so crucial to us at Mercedes-Benz." The campaign covers two national television spots, two radio spots and five print ads with regional versions of each produced also. Beginning September 10, the commercials are going to be aired on both national TV networks and national cable stations. The airing will continue until November 4 on top rating programs like CSI, Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order, Ugly Betty and the 59th Primetime Emmy awards. Other channels to air the commercial are Bravo, ESPN and the National Geographic Channel.
For Mercedes Benz maniacs wanting a glimpse of the new Mercedes Benz C-Class, don't dare miss to watch. The Mercedes Benz C-Class offers two choices, luxury and sport models for different buyers. The all new 2008 Mercedes Benz C-Class models begins with the tag price of $31, 975 for the C300 Sport Sedan run by an engine that powers up to 228 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. Free Winter Car Care Maintenance Inspection for Illinois and Indiana Motorists
Whether we like it or not, we just can’t stop winter from coming but we can minimize its effect on our vehicles by taking advantage of the free Winter Car Care maintenance inspection that will be provided by participating AAA Approved Auto Repair (AAR) facilities found in Illinois and northern Indiana. The free inspections are part of the AAA Chicago’s 2007 Winter Car Care Program which will run through the month of October and now on its 28th year. The good news is there is no AAA membership required in short it’s free for the public. All Illinois and Indiana motorists are invited to partake of this rare opportunity. The auto parts that would be inspected by the AAR facilities will include the battery load and terminals, anti-freeze, oil, brake fluid, power steering, and transmission fluids, belts, hoses, tires, and wiper blades. Most of the common problems noted by AAR technicians include old or corroded batteries, damaged or worn wiper blades, clogged air filters, tire pressure and wear, low windshield washer fluid, dirty or low motor oil and low anti-freeze levels. For Illinois and Indiana, AAR technicians have found out that faulty batteries and faulty terminal connections are often the cause of more car starting problems as compared to any other factor. This is not surprising since cold weather is really a major cause of battery’s starting power problem, the drop in temperature also affects the battery’s power. According to Robert Kazor, AAA Chicago’s Assistant Vice President of Automotive Services, "Older batteries are especially troublesome in winter. And a variety of high-tech devices ranging from DVD players to automatic, sliding car doors are placing even greater demands on a vehicle's electronic system." AAA is also recommending for motorists to closely monitor the condition of their vehicle’s battery especially those that are two years old and above. In addition, it is not advised to rely on the 7 year warranty of your batteries since there is no guarantee that an older battery will continue to perform well in cold weather. The main objective of the free AAA Winter Car Care maintenance inspections is to help car owners to prepare their vehicles for the coming winter season and at the same time help them to improve fuel economy even on such weather condition. The mere replacement of clogged air filter can improve fuel economy by as much as 10 percent or saving up to 32 cents per gallon. Aside from that, a new air filter can also help to keep impurities from damaging the inside of the engine. These are just some of the winter car care maintenance tips that AAA would share as part of its free inspections.

The Best Cars for the City

The downtown roads makes your car insurance rise as the city gives your car risks with traffic, U-turns and other city car dangers, your vehicle must be tough enough to be an urban car. With the right car to hit the downtown, driving can always be as comfortable and pleasurable as ever. Cars.com listed ten vehicles that can give you the best ride in the city streets. The auto reviewers of the site judged the cars based on their performance, size, ride quality and cabin comfort. Here are the ultimate urban cars:
2007 Mini Cooper Despite its size, the cabin can seat four adults and is outfitted with six airbags, and the hatch design and folding backseat provide a surprisingly roomy cargo space. Front-wheel drive and traction control mean winter driving in this stylish car is no problem. The pricier S model gives excellent power and braking on city streets making it our ultimate urban car.
Length: 145.6 inches Turning circle: 35.1 feet Seats: 4 City MPG*: 26 - 27 (premium gas)
2008 BMW 328i wagon A much faster twin-turbo engine is available in the 335i, but the wagon which packs 35 percent more cargo room than the sedan without incurring any extra length comes only in 328i guise. Plus, it has all those BMW attributes at a price that's easier to digest. The steering may be a bit heavy for some, but that's the tradeoff for owning an "ultimate driving machine" in the city.
Length: 178.2 inches Turning circle: 36.0 feet Seats: 5 City MPG: 17 - 18 (premium gas)
2008 Ford Escape Hybrid According to the EPA, the Escape Hybrid is the most efficient SUV on the market and also, it has low CO2 emissions. Besides the fact that the gas engine automatically turns off when stopped so you don't have to waste precious fuel in rush hour the hybrid can also cruise in near-silence on electric power at slow speeds.
Length: 174.7 inches Turning circle: 36.7 feet Seats: 5 City MPG: 29 - 34
2007 Honda Civic Hybrid The Honda Civic Hybrid has lower emissions and uses a lot less fuel. A small turning circle means enhanced maneuverability in tight spots, and the optional navigation system has more than 7 million points of interest. An impeccably finished cabin adds to the car's appeal.
Length: 176.7 inches Turning circle: 34.8 feet Seats: 5 City MPG: 40
2008 Honda CR-V Gas mileage is respectable for an SUV, and the ride is comfortable enough for bumpy streets. The large rear window makes for good visibility, and an optional backup camera means you can ace that back-alley parking.
Length: 178.0 inches Turning circle: 37.8 feet Seats: 5 City MPG: 19 - 20
2008 Honda Fit The Fit has just enough zip for stop-and-go duties, and gas mileage is predictably thrifty given that the car weighs just three-fourths of a Toyota Camry. It's small enough to squeeze between garbage trucks and buses, and its tall windows and large mirrors take the guesswork out of tight maneuvers.
Length: 157.4 inches Turning circle: 34.3 feet Seats: 5 City MPG: 27 - 28
2008 Land Rover LR2 The best choice for tackling city life is the handsome Land Rover LR2. For ease in maneuvering and parking, it's shorter from bumper to bumper than the Acura RDX and BMW X3, and it has a tighter turning circle. Standard parking sensors on the rear bumper and optional approach and puddle lights are also great to have.
Length: 177.1 inches Turning circle: 37.1 feet Seats: 5 City MPG: 16 (premium gas)
2008 Mazda5 The 2008 model sports a fresh look but retains its distinct Japanese edginess. The Mazda5 is still substantial, coming in at almost exactly the same length as a Toyota RAV4. Steering is sharp for tight parking maneuvers, and the ride is relatively smooth.
Length: 181.5 inches Turning circle: 34.8 feet Seats: 6 City MPG: 19
2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata The Mazda MX-5 Miata has the smallest turning circle 4 feet tighter than the Mini's. This makes it most adept at hanging U-turns, and its nose swings sharply into parallel parking spaces, which are easy to navigate when the top is down. It slips through congestion where most cars are gridlocked and you look so good.
Length: 157.3 inches Turning circle: 30.8 feet Seats: 2 City MPG: 20 - 22 (premium gas)
2008 Scion xB
The xB delivers on the promise of its boxy shape by offering loads of cargo room in a compact package up to 69.9 cubic feet, to be exact which makes it ideal for carting your belongings around. Engaging steering response and the tight turning radius are a boon for narrow streets too.
Length: 167.3 inches urning circle: 34.8 feet Seats: 5 ïCity MPG: 22

UAW is no longer powerful as it was

The dispute between General Motors and the United Auto Workers may have reached its end yesterday as the two parties agreed on a tentative deal, it may not be a labor victory for the UAW with its contents. The UAW had been historically known as one of the most dominant force in the industrial sector of the U.S. "For a long time, the UAW was the face of the labor movement but it's not where the power is in organized labor any more," says Julius Getman, labor law professor at the University of Texas School of Law, and author of "Strike." The UAW is the 12th ranking U.S union with its 538,448 members. The largest union is the National Education Association with 2,767,696 members and the second is the Service Employees International Union with membership numbering to 1,575,485 according to the BNA, a specialized news and information publisher. Because of the tightening of legal controls in the union organization as an effect of globalization, the membership in labor unions have declined for the past years. Dating back in 1977, 24 percent of workers are members of the labor union and last year, the number declined to only 12 percent. But calls for union organization have also intensified for the past years. Such acts helped revitalize some unions which are willing to come out from their local industrial shells. The new voices of the labor movement, "are talking about organizing Wal-Mart and reinventing the Civil Rights movement, bringing power in the workplace to workers who are on the margin of society" as explained Gary Chaison, professor of Industry relations at Clark University, Graduate School of Management. "If I said to UAW president Ron Gettelfinger, 'you should go organize Wal-Mart,' he'd look at me like I was crazy," he adds.
"The UAW used to be one of the most innovative, militant unions, now it finds itself moving backwards."
